Reactive Environment for Dynamic Volume Control

Driven by the interpersonal interactions amongst musicians, this performance environment system gives musicians playing together in a band the ability to affect each other’s volumes dynamically, simply by moving around. Participants, who are able to hear each other through headphones, experience volume levels as a function of their relative proximity: as two musicians approach one another, they are able to hear each other’s volumes as getting louder. Conversely, they are able to perceive each other’s volumes as getting quieter as they move further away from one another. The result is a system that allows musicians to seamlessly create and adjust individualized audio mixes throughout their performance.
